I have two mmc cards, my sandisk requires mmcinit only once. My JVC card required mmcinit twice and of course my SD card doesnt work at all. I have not used any usb on the gumstix yet. I bought a Belkin F8T030 bluetooth access point. This device (updated with Roving Networks code) functions as a gateway from bluetooth to ethernet. My gumstix now uses my network dhcp server to get a ip address. This has been very reliable. You have to disable rfcom and to close the bluetooth connection shutdowns.
