Hi I don't even have a gumstix of my own yet -- that is being worked on -- but I wonder if your problem might be that you have a firewall turned on somewhere which is dropping packets? That is to say, is iptables starting up on the gumstix itself by default and blocking all packets inbound and out? You might want to try flushing the firewall of all rules (get rid of them) and stopping the iptables service on the gumstix until you can get your network access running. It is also possible that another machine is doing firewalling and is dropping packets from the gumstix MAC address. Remember that I'm a gumstix newbie without even a single module.
