I grounded SCL pin on the 3.3V side and I was getting 2.5V (on the 5v side). Should have been getting 0. I grounded the SDA pin on the 3.3 V side and was getting 0.5 V on the corresponding pin on the other side. SCL is the pin that has been giving me problems.
