Well, the thing is, if he has to control 32 relays (digital I/O), and 16 analog inputs, he needs a micro-controller that (a) has 16 A/D ports, and (b) has at least 48 I/O pins overall. An ATmega168 only has 8 A/D ports (only 6 in the DIP form), and only 15 other digital I/O ports (assuming you use 2 for comms). That's why I recommended the Axon - its an ATmega640, and has all the I/O he would need to do this. Of course, he could spin a board with a bare ATmega640 on it, and all the relays and MOSFETs he needs as another option.
