Well, first of all, I would try running a program like sertest to see if your device is working properly. <http://docswiki.gumstix.com/Sample_code/C/Serial> Which serial port are you trying to use? Presumably you're trying to use a console-vx board? Which type of cable do you have? (null modem cable or straight through cable?) For connecting to a device that plugs into the PC, I would expect that you'd need the straight through cable.
