ifup uses the configuration files in /etc/network to bring interfaces up. I'm guessing that if mwlan0 isn't listed there, it won't work. Try ifconfig mwlan0 up Failing that, make sure you've modprobed the proper modules, then try ifconfig mwlan0 up again. I'm not sure what needs to be loaded. pcmcia, pcmcia_core, smc91x, gumstix-smc91x look promising. Someone else might know the specifics.
