Actually, part of halting is shutting down the network, which does, in fact turn the link LED off. Executing /etc/init.d/S40network stop also turns the link LED off. Interestingly enough, manually executing: modprobe -r smc91x causes the following crash: Device 'smc91x.0' does not have a release() function, it is broken and must be fixed.
