My guess is that the voltage regulators are going into thermal shutdown.

All of the voltage regulators on the robostix are linear regaultors,
so everything above 5.5v is being completely wasted as heat. The specs
are probably only true if the voltage regulators are kept at a
particular temperature (at least that's the way that most of them
are).
