Back on the Gumstix tip, check out some tight little single-voltage supplies in the $40-50 (qty 1) range. http://firmtronics.com/rc-products/sbec.php http://firmtronics.com/rc-products/sbec-industrial.php They claim: "SBEC: - Converts main pack voltage, up to 40 NiCd or 12s Lipos, into 5V (or 6V for faster servo performance) suitable for up to 8 servos, gyro, receiver, etc. - Low EMI (suitable for AV systems), short circuit protection, small (0.79x0.59 in), light weight 11g/0.39oz." "SBEC-Industrial: - Ultra Compact: 23x14x8mm | 0.9x0.55x0.31in - Wide input range: 5.5V to 60V - Up to 2.5A continuous output current - Available in several standard output voltages - 200kHz switching frequency - Up to 90% efficient - 2.5mA operating current; 30=B5A shutdown current" SBEC stands for "Super Battery Eliminator Circuit" -- all-electric R/C modelers call regulated supplies "battery eliminators" since well-designed ones filter the crap the motors put out so it doesn't make the radio controls malfunction... The "old school" approach was to have a separate battery for the radio. No, they're not as good a cost-per-watt as the mini-itx 120 watt 0r 200 watt supplies, but they ought to run a small gumwad AOK... I'll be finding out pretty soon now and will report. -- Michael M.
