Hi Jon, There was a locating system used in Mr. Gates home. More or less card readers in door jams, pretty low tech. How about an antenna array to triangulate a low power blue tooth device? The more sensitive the antenna array the smaller the transmitter. Have the collar periodically wakeup and transmit. The battery life would be dependent on total transmission time. I think on the collar side it might be best implemented with a low power micro and Bluetooth interface. An Atmel of TI micro would fit the bill. Using a Gumstix on the collar side is a bit overkill, and from what I've seen of the PXA255 startup code, I don't see any of the low power features enabled. Perhaps use a Gumstix for each antenna location, and have these intercommunicate. They would be responsible for controlling PTZ cameras, and database logging. How big of an area are you working with?
