Actually, another thing that Axel noted is that the from<type> downcasting functions are not really things that we'd like to expose to the user since they are not typesafe. In the current implementation they are class methods so we cannot hide them. With the proposed implementation they are just ordinary functions so we can decide not to export them. I tried this, that is not generating and not exporting the from<type> functions. Everything still builds ok, so I guess nothing was using these functions.
