I have offered to give scripting support (Lua bindings) for an OS X 
GTK+ implementation.  Have the same dilemma as you - it seems there's 
no project taking the challenge right now.  My bet is on the Cairo 
backend to provide new life to this (avoiding the need to make X11 
emulating code).

So.. that's all I can offer.
