The servers don't have any X components installed, they just run as daemons. The cli communicates with the daemon over the socket, as mentioned in those links. I'm not an expert in how this is all put together, because I don't actually run it myself, but I know it exists. Looking at one such instance now, it only links against the following extenal libraries: libgobject-2 libglib-2 libintl libz libm libiconv libthr libc libpcre libffi Simply launch it as a background daemon - with no X dependencies, it doesn't try to open a GUI window, and will just run until manually killed.
