Hello,

I am encountering a problem with gscan2pdf (tried with version 1.8.7 and 2.1.7) with a Brother ADS-2800W (connected with wired ethernet) on Ubuntu.

After the fetching devices step if I select "Brother ADS-2800W" device I have this error message:
Error retreiving scanner options: error getting option 5: invalid argument
After closing dialog box device is removed until I restart gscan2pdf.

This device seems to work with SANE and Simple Scan.

You can find included a log made with version 2.1.7 and --log=log switch.

    Hello,

    Thanks.

Context of tests between previous tests and these one:
1st Computer: Ubuntu 17.10 with HP and ADS-2800W devices
    2nd Computer (1st stage): Ubuntu 18.04 with ADS-2800W device
2nd Computer (2nd stage): Ubuntu 18.04 with ADS-2800W and HP devices
HP: same version of hplip and no firmware update
ADS-2800W: same version of driver (1.1.0.0-0) and no firmware update

I needed to reinstall the 2nd computer as I needed it for others temporary purpose.
So I installed Ubuntu 18.04 from 18.04 iso (not 18.04.1) as I made previously.
I use offline installation without updates and then once installed I installed Brother driver and gscan2pdf from your ppa.

I made a lot of tests and here are my results:

1st Computer: Ubuntu 17.10 with HP and ADS-2800W devices
    With gscan2pdf 2.1.7:
    Same as before.
    Devices availability:
    + HP device is available
+ ADS-2800W device is unavailable and if selected, desapears
    With gscan2pdf 2.1.8RC1:
    Devices availability:
    + HP device is available
+ ADS-2800W device is now available (tab name is empty)
    Scan test:
    + HP
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > No tesseract error (no dialogue box)
    > Impossible to save as a pdf (leaving defaults options) or jpg because operation is never ending (I waited 5 mins)
    + ADS-2800W
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > No tesseract error (no dialogue box)
    > Impossible to save as a pdf (leaving defaults options) or jpg because operation is never ending (I waited 5 mins)

So I reverted back gscan2pdf to 2.1.7-0~ppa1bionic manually using the deb from your ppa as Ubuntu 17.10 is no more available to verify if I will have same "save as" trouble.
    Back with gscan2pdf 2.1.7:
    Devices availability:
    + HP device is available
+ ADS-2800W device is unavailable and if selected, desapears
    Scan test:
    + HP
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > A Tesseract error is appearing sometimes in B&W and always in color (dialogue box) - I don't remember this error before maybe because I'm always scanning A4 documents essentialy in B&W and my test document is not A4.
+ save as pdf or jpg is working well.

2nd Computer (1st stage): Ubuntu 18.04 (fresh install) with ADS-2800W device
    With gscan2pdf 2.1.7:
    Devices availability:
+ ADS-2800W device was available and did not disapear (amazing ... I'm Going Slightly Mad ... on previous Ubuntu 18.04 install with exactly same steps ADS-2800W was not available as with Ubuntu 17.10) ... (tab name is empty) ... maybe some dependencies have been updated.
    With gscan2pdf 2.1.8RC1:
    Devices availability:
    + ADS-2800W device is available
    Scan test:
    + ADS-2800W
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > No tesseract error (no dialogue box)
    > Impossible to save as a pdf (leaving defaults options) or jpg because operation is never ending (I waited 5 mins)

2nd Computer (2nd stage): Ubuntu 18.04 (fresh install) with ADS-2800W and HP device
    With gscan2pdf 2.1.8RC1:
    Devices availability:
    + HP device is available
+ ADS-2800W device is available (tab name is empty)
    Scan test:
    + HP
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > No tesseract error (no dialogue box)
    > Impossible to save as a pdf (leaving defaults options) or jpg because operation is never ending (I waited 5 mins)
    + ADS-2800W
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > No tesseract error (no dialogue box)
    > Impossible to save as a pdf (leaving defaults options) or jpg because operation is never ending (I waited 5 mins)

So as with Ubuntu 17.10 I reverted back to gscan2pdf 2.1.7 directly from your ppa on the 2nd computer.
    Back with gscan2pdf 2.1.7:
    Devices availability:
    + HP device is available
+ ADS-2800W is available (tab name is empty)
    Scan test:
    + HP
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > A Tesseract error is appearing sometimes in B&W and always in color (dialogue box)
    > save as pdf or jpg is working well.
    + ADS-2800W
    > scan in B&W & in Color worked well
    > A Tesseract error is appearing sometimes in B&W and always in color (dialogue box)
    > save as pdf or jpg is working well.

On each computer I ran the scanimage -h -d 'brother5:net1:dev0' with always the same exception on option 5.

You will find in attachement all logs from each test, screen captures, and doc I used for example.

I will on next thursday or next weekend update my primary computer by reinstalling Ubuntu 18.04 in place of 17.10. I have postponed this because this is my professional computer and I have many backup, install and customization to do but I think this is required because I don't understand why on the new 18.04 installation gscan2pdf 2.1.7 show without error the ADS-2800W (this never worked on 18.04 and 18.10).

Another strange thing ... some logs appears to be corrupt (2.1.7 with color option) ... but using geany they can be opened.

If you have any question ... do not hesitate !

    Kr,

Thanks for the log file. I have a lot on at the moment and probably won't get to it this week.

    Thanks for the comprehensive test.

You have found an unrelated bug that I managed to introduce whilst trying to improve the display of error messages. I have fixed it here and will try and post a new .deb for you to test in the next couple of days.

    Hello Jeffrey,

Unfortunately, I did not have time to do everything I planned ... but in a few days I'll get there!

Ok, no problem for the new deb. I will test it when you are ready !

    Kind regards

The tab without a title is not an error, but because Brother used an empty string for the title of the group of options. I'll set it to "Scan Options" if it is empty.

    Please give this a go.

    Hello Jeffrey,

Excuse me because I was traveling for business reasons and I did not take the scanner with me :)

I have installed and tested this evening very quickly the 2.18.RC2 because I had some scan to do.

Like that, it seems to work well. Scan Options tab is labelled as you said "Scan Options" due to Brother empty name. Scan Options are well here and I just use the "auto detect document size" yet. I successfully saved my scan as pdf.
I made this test on my travel companion with Ubuntu 17.10 :(

I will make more tests tomorrow and after tomorrow with Ubuntu 18.04 on another computer.

You can find here the log included.
You will see in the log that HP device was off.

    Kind Regards

No problem. Thanks for the feedback. In that case, I'll release it as soon as I can.
