Great question Drummer ! And sorry for the delayed response. Had been traveling.
I changed SSDs in 2 laptops so decided to switch them to win11 from win10 and elementary 6 from the previous 5.2.1
Main gripe with win10 was this weird mix of old and new apps/settings/UI and I also wanted to use the "windows subsystem for android" to run some android apps (that capability is still far away it seems - its not even being enabled on the win11 launch day / RTM image but after some more time...)
But even in beta Win11 is much better with respect UI consistency and also generally better than win10 in terms of stability and most importantly it finally has those tiny features which everyone now expects due to the habits formed using Android/iOS on their phones.
TBH, MS has improved a lot since Satya Nadella - even though they have pretty much shifted to the opensource philosophy in some respects. It would have been pretty unbelievable 10 years back to think a ~ trillion dollar company would realize do that and also throw away their own browser engines etc and start using a FOSS browser engine, introduce windows subsystem for linux / WSL on their OS and whatnot.
Even linux GUI apps and desktops work quite well on WSL2 now. Try Kali Linux win-kex if you want a quick simple setup to get an entire linux desktop running ALONG with the windows desktop !
(the task bar start button thing just draws on the top edge and you can run any linux app from there while running win apps from the usual windows taskbar/start button thing )
Probably they'll shift to linux kernel too in some years and just restrict themselves to the windows desktop :) And then just MS Office in some more years. Like they are doing on android with their launcher and 8-10 pretty good android apps. With all those it stops materring who owns the OS if people are only going to interact with your launcher/desktop and a few office/entertainment apps.
Ok, i think i am quite sleep deprived and should stop typing more before i break the internet.
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Grub2Win is installed and works fine since few months. Including switching between rEFInd/Clover/Grub2Win occasionally.
Today, when I tried to update to version 2.3.0.6 the setup installer says windows version not supported.
"Grub2Win does not yet support this OS build 64bit WIN_10 build 22000"
Can I run it in compatibility mode as "windows 8" or is there something that will break ?
Hi Bullet,
I just uploaded version 2.3.0.7 which lets you run Grub2Win on Windows 11 beta systems, at your own risk.
Realize that the AutoIt compiler does not yet support Windows 11.
Grub2Win is written in the AutoIt language, so errors may occur.
I have had some reports of errors on Windows 11 systems running Grub2Win.
You will receive a warning message when you run the Grub2Win setup on Windows 11.
Hope this helps.
Dave

grub2win not working on insider beta Windows 11 Build = 26120
Grub2Win Has Not Yet Been Tested
Against This Preview Build Of Windows.
You May Encounter Problems.
Do You Want To Continue The Setup? theres no options only download and i downloaded it today
Hi Alan,
I just uploaded a fix for this to Source Forge.
Download Grub2Win version 2.4.3.1 build 1755 or higher.
You will still get the "Not Tested" message, but will be able to continue the setup.
Please not that several sites offer Grub2Win downloads which are out of date.
Some of these site also contain scams and malware.
Grub2Win should only be downloaded from the official Source Forge site
https://sourceforge.net/projects/grub2win/files/latest/download
Please download and let me know if this works for you.
Thanks,
Dave
