Are you sure? I've got root-only privs for /dev/sr*, and I can rip just 
fine using my user account. Maybe it is a difference between 
scsi-emulation, and using an actual scsi drive? Can you temporarily 
change the permissions for /dev/sr* and see if it actually prevents you 
from ripping?
