Hello GM team,
The Debian packaging team announced that they are removing the Jasper package from their distribution due to a lack of maintinance. This evidently impacts GraphicsMagick and ImageMagick with it's support for JPEG2000 but evidently replacement coverage for this important file format is available in OpenJPEG or ffmpeg:

Here is the original announcement.
Thanks for all the work you all do on GraphicsMagick.. a great toolkit for sure!

Hi, jasper will be removed from Debian for the stretch release (and
following that, the archive in general).
It's been unmaintained for nearly a decade, please als see
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=812630
Your package uses jasper, so please either remove the JPEG2000
functionality or move to a supported implementation (e.g. openjpeg or
ffmpeg).
A removal tracker has been setup by the release team at
https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/jasper-rm.html
This bug will be bumped to release-critical status in a few weeks.
Cheers,
Moritz
After many years of no maintenance, the Jasper author has now made three more releases to address security concerns and there is active fuzzing to discover remaining issues. The new home for Jasper code is on github at Official Repository for the JasPer Image Coding Toolkit.
The Jasper author has continued to address maintenance concerns, including security issues. Might this convince Debian to re-introduce Jasper?
