I guess it is a resized view of the image, which fit you window? Did you
try to see it at 100% (hit z key)? Do you still have the problem?

It is maybe just a problem with the zoom algo... You can try to use
another one (check in Preferences).

yes, damn! Good try, but the problem persists. 
No help even from tuning thumbnail quality, nor from going (in image
quality) from "hyper" to "nearest"
