#16 Hangs when substitution variables are used

The use of substitution variables hangs gqlplus.
For example,

select '&b' from dual;

renders the gqlplus unusable. I think it's because
sqlplus is asking for the value of variable b; gqlplus
doesn't seem to be prepared for this possibility.
