In those threads, there are download links to kernels with that option
turned off so you can confirm if that's the problem.

Unless they've fixed it, it only works fine for some devices.

The 'about' page says "The USB potocol stuff is based on the GPSBabel
project. Credits go to Robert Lipe and Alan Bleasby author of the Jeeps
library" so it's unsuprising they have simlar requirements.
