In the "Utilities" folder inside the "Applications" folder on your Mac is an application called "Terminal."  Open that program, and you will have a window with a command-line prompt where old-fashioned UNIX commands can be typed.

Try typing this (all on one line) with your eTrex attached and see what happens:

/*/GPSBabel+*/gpsbabel -t -i garmin -f /dev/cu.USA* -o gpx -F ~/Desktop/tracks.gpx
