To be entirely honest, I had always assumed that diff just choked on binary files, because that's what the bastardized version of diff that was included with some precambrian version of Borland C++ did. I see, now, that it does a binary compare and outputs a single line saying they're different if they indeed are. However, I still like my version for two reasons: Reason the first, the one you said: it actually tells us what the difference was, rather than making us look for it. Reason the second, mkwintesto needs to know whether it's a binary compare or not, so why not make it friendlier on Unix as long as we have to distinguish it somehow anyway? |
