While Josh's GUI has been much appreciated and has surely helped thousands of users, it's been a problem that it's available only for one OS and that nobody but him can rebuild it. I remember looking at wxwindows long ago and being turned off by the C++ requirement, but now that C++ is formally standardized and _most_ compilers don't make a total mockery of it I could get over that now. (Esp. if someone else is doing the "real" work. :-) I accept that GUIs are less portable than I'd like, but if we can improve our bird to stone ratio, we should consider it. That said, I'm a pragmatic guy and while I'll nudge things in a portable direction, if someone came along today with a visual basic thingy that impressed me, I'd probably check it in becuase we'd be no worse off than we were today. All other things equal, I'd prefer portable C++ that's cross-platform to a proprietary language that only works on one OS, even if that OS happens to be the most popular on the planet. But He Who Does The Work gets to make those kinds of decisions as long as it doesn't impede others. RJL |
