I didn't explain it completely. It lets people copy data from BaseCamp to Google Earth. (The link describes the program in more detail.) Even if Garmin isn't putting more effort into BaseCamp, it will still be usable for many more years. BaseCamp doesn't have any reasonable replacement. It can use the old (original) Garmin map format (which has been reverse engineered). There's a fairly wide-spread community of people who create maps from OSM data in that format. There are even more people who use those maps. There are people who still use MapSource (and prefer it).
