Wouldn't it be more prudent to use something such as the 'custom' format or the "XCSV" format which will give you, just the raw data from GPS babel? It seems to me that it'd be more logical to use a preexisting format that provides all the data that GPS babel knows/understands, then filter into/out-of your database as needed.

A simple perl hack would give you pretty solid database access for the data from gpsbabel and it would be quick and clean.
