I just noticed that uploading a .gpx that has waypoints that are longer than 6 characters can cause rather subtle issues. For example, in a snippet like <wpt lat="47.6149" lon="10.3354">
Rettenberg-1
<cmt>Station 1</cmt> </wpt> <wpt lat="47.6157" lon="10.3313">
Rettenberg-2
<cmt>Station 2</cmt> </wpt> the names of the waypoints will be truncated to 6 characters, so both 'Rettenberg-1' and 'Rettenberg-2' become 'Retten' and hence only a single waypoint is stored on the geko. Now I have no idea how common this limitation is among the various Garmin devices. And is there a chance to detect which model is connected to the machine at all (this model is connected via serial port)? Anyway, it would be nice to print a warning when uploading waypoints that (a) exceed the limit and (b) hence causes name collisions. Ideally, waypoint names would be truncated in a smart manner automatically (like checking which character makes the waypoints unique and using that along with the first n characters), but I believe that would be way too complicated.
