I don't know anything about what Stan has said. I do know that my Keyspan adapter & driver creates two entries in the /dev folder. One is ttyXXXX and the other is cuXXXX. The correct one to use with GPSbabel is the cuXXXX. So, you might try looking to see if there is a cu device available and try using that one.
