Hello GPSBabel-using friends. This list gets very little traffic by design, but: GPSBabel 1.6.0 is available now. We made almost 600 improvements and changes since our last release. Our most impactful changes are probably improvements in the Garmin FIT reader, adding a workaround for date problems (hello, 1999!) in the Skytraq chips used in certain devices from Canmore and Mini-Homer, improvements to handle GIS Shapefiles, and more. Release notes: https://www.gpsbabel.org/news/gpsbabel-1.6.0.html (still in progress) Download page: https://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html Support the project: https://www.gpsbabel.org/contribute.html Enjoy! Robert Lipe, Chief Babel-head P.S. Please don't respond here. Direct any questions or suggestions to the gpsbabel-misc mailing list. Hello, GPSBabel-heads. It's been a long time in the making, but GPSBabel 1.4.0 is now available for download. It boasts a new self-updating GUI, translations, many new GPSes (Wintec, Bushnell, Delorme, Enigma, Skytraq, Visiontac, and more) and formats. Read the full GPSBabel 1.4.0 announcement<ttp://www.gpsbabel.org/news/20100620.html>at http://www.gpsbabel.org/news/20100620.html My thanx to all that helped make it happen, whether reporting problems, making suggestions, or laying code. Enjoy! RJL P.S. I know that the Geocaching community is well represented amongst babel-heads. Next week is GeoWoodstock VIII<http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1QM7K>, the worlds largest annual gathering of geocachers in Carnation, WA. I will be there in case any of you want to fawn over me or beg for autographs. :-) On event day, I'll be one of several people wearing a "We Are Nashville" shirt, in support of the recent floods here. If you grab a person wearing such a shirt and it's not me, he or she can likely help identify me in a crowd or call me for a hookup. If you're a GPSBabel user that's present, I'd like to meet you. I will not be wearing a ridiculous multi-colored propeller-beanie this year. :-) |

With over 1,000 downloads this week and only one "real" bugreport, I feel it's time to actually announce last week's beta. A description of changes since 1.3.6 is available at http://www.gpsbabel.org/news/20100215.html - please check it out and see that it does what you think it should do. There's a trainload of new code here and I only plan one or two more betas before considering this the successor to 1.3.6. If you're running a beta version from the GUI and have *not* been bugged on startup to upgrade to the latest version, please contact me. Server logs are still showing checkins of versions that should have been offered upgrades months ago and I can't explain that unless the user (of beta software) is consciously declining an upgrade offer (to beta software...). There's either a user or a software behaviour there that I can't explain. Also, it feels weird to have to disclaim this, but we've reached the size/success that we're the target of malware. If your copy of GPSBabel comes from any web site other than http://www.gpsbabel.org or your trusted operating system provider, you should consider it suspect. Via Google Alerts, I've seen GPSBabel on various "warez" sites - which baffles me, since it's free software that just asks for a donation if you consider it useful - that contains phishing attempts, malware, and other naughtiness. "Let's be careful out there." Anyway, please do check out the beta. Report success or failure to -misc. If you haven't been auto-notified of an update, I'm especially interested. Babel on! RJL |

GPSBabel 1.3.4 released In the nearly five months since the release of GPSBabel 1.3.3, the developers and other workers have been busily working on fixes and enhancements. This is a milestone release of GPSBabel as it comes on the fifth anniversary of the initial posting of GPSBabel to Sourceforge. During that time, GPSBabel has grown from about a half dozen to over a hundred formats, has gained attention in the media, been used by a number of successful programs<http://www.gpsbabel.org/tips/related.html>, and has been downloaded nearly a half million times - not counting copies that are included with other programs. Clearly, it's grown way beyond what I expected and it doesn't really show any signs of slowing down. While there's a mind-numbing list of fixes available<http://www.gpsbabel.org/changes.html>(and an even more comprehensive list of changes in the source tree since we ARE an open source project...) here's a list of highlights. New formats. - Vitovtt <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_vitovtt.html>tracks - NMEA <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_nmea.html> and XSV realtime tracking <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/tracking.html> output. - G7towin .g7t<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_g7towin.html>. - TomTom POI ascii<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_tomtom_asc.html>files. - TomTom <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_tomtom_itn.html>Iteneraries. - Garmin POI gpi <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_garmin_gpi.html>files. - Geogrid <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_ggv_log.html>viewer for tracklogs. New features. - Multiple URL support in GDB<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_gdb.html>and GPX <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_gpx.html>. - Enhancements to KML<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_kml.html>output for Google Earth. - Support for Wintec/G-ray/WBT 201<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_wbt.html>. - Mac GUI support for Wintec<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_wbt.html>models. - Microsecond resolution in many formats. - Enhance NMEA <http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_nmea.html>reader to handle Sony GPS and GISTeq. - Many enhancements to Unicsv<http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-1.3.4/fmt_unicsv.html>format. - Hungarian translation of Windows GUI. Major fixes. - Reworked GDB suport. - Improvements to Raymarine. - TourExchangeFormat overhauled. - Enhancements to Google Map reader. - Rebuilt OS/X version with newer libusb to correct Garmin USB problem on 10.4.10. We've also added the ability for you to help support the project <http://www.gpsbabel.org/contribute.html>via Google Checkout in addition to Paypal. Please do exercise this version and report your luck - good or bad - to the gpsbabel-misc mailing list. GPSBabel 1.3.4 is available for download<http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html>now. Thank you! I've mentioned several times on the list that it was coming, but after an extended gestation period and the assistance of many midwifes GPSBabel 1.3.0 is here. The list of changes[1] is huge. Notable inclusions: * Rewritten Garmin USB layer more than doubles the number of supported Garmin receivers[2]. * New GUIs for Windows and OS X * Automatic conversions of data different character sets such as sending international characters to an ASCII-only GPS * Major documentation * A trainload of new formats and fixes. Many folks contributed time, talent, and/or cash to this release (and during this part of the speech, I always relate to the Emmy winners that struggle with trying to either name everyone that may have been involved or risk forgetting someone) so while I'd like to thank everyone, I'll call out Olaf Klein and Ron Parker have been my universal "make stuff happen" guys on this project and Karl Smith for his work on the Mac GUI that has has helped bring the Mac build back into the fold. The download page is http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html - don't blow by that Paypal link too quickly - you don't have to have a Paypal account to help. :-) Enjoy! Robert Lipe, Chief Babel-Head. I mean, the 1.2.5 = > version is working for me and doing what I need it to do, but we don't = > want to be forgotten now, do we? ;-) The last couple of releases I made, I sent out help requests looking for = a volunteer with appropriate skills and menagerie of hardware and test prog= rams to take over the MacGPSBabel builds and support. I even offered a plan = B that if enough Mac users clicked the donate link that I'd buy a Mini, tak= e over the builds and testing there, and exercise my matrix of 13 GPSes on OS/X. Since that announcement there have been well over 4,000 downloads of MacGPSBabel, and about a half dozen donators. Nobody else stepped up to d= o the work. I did test (and address some problems with) the core GPSBabel on PPC/OSX = just last week. I do keep the source building and passing the test suite. I= t's certainly not forgotten. If even a small percentage of the Mac users would share the cost, I'll po= ny up the time to keep it going. = |

Hello, Babel-Heads. Thanx to the work of many, GPSBabel 1.2.4 has arrived. It has a multitude of changes, highlighted here: New Formats * The big one - USB support of Garmin VistaC, SummitC, 60C, 60CS, 76C, 76CS, and 96C. (Windows only for now. A libusb solution for OSes like Linux and OS/X is in development.) * Netstumbler support added. * IGC for flight recorders. * Brauniger IQbarograph added. * HSA Endeavour format added. New Filters * Stack filter added. This is a powerful feature that adds a new "dimension" to heavy filtering exercises. You can now push, pop, and swap lists of waypoints allowing arbitrary combinations of processing and merges in a single invocation. * A new 'sort' filter to alphabetize lists. Enhancements * MacGPSBabel supports OS/X 10.3 and adds smart name generation. * Text, html, palmdoc options can now support Geocaching logs. * Add geocache type and container type to XCSV, allow them as input. * 'points' option to arc filter added to let you find points near the points given instead of near the line between the points given. (Think "near exits" instead of "along the road".) * Optionally erase waypoints in a Magellan before sending new ones. * NMEA module now generates and parses additional sentences. * Improvements to Garmin protocol debugging. * Added new Groundspeak "small" container size. Fixes * Arc filter no longer intermittently loses points. * Garmin Mapsource fixes for routes & memory corruption. * Garmin StreetPilot firmware 2.70 support. * Garmin Vista 3.60 support. * Garmin Forerunner 201 track reading support. * Street Atlas USA 2005 tracks/routes now supported. * More tolerant of bad Windows timing from Serial/USB converters. Cosmetic * I have registered http://www.gpsbabel.org as our new domain for those that can't remember http://gpsbabel.sourceforge.net. * Gerald (a.k.a. "Dinohunters") has donated a spiffy new logo for us. There is a more comprehensive list of changes at http://www.gpsbabel.org/changes.html while the intensely curious on the activity under the covers (after all this IS an open source project...) can see the CVS logs at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gpsbabel/gpsbabel/ Supporting Free Software GPSBabel is free software, both free as in price and free as in liberty. You have the freedom to study how it works and modify it as you need. Source code is available from the download sites. You can help the project in a number of ways. You don't have to donate code to help, but that's always appreciated. There are a number of ways that non-developers can help. You can help others on the mailing lists, improve documentation, or offer testing. While GPSBabel is free, the mapping programs and units we buy for testing are not. A number of people have asked how they can contribute to the project financially and we've added a way to do that. http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=58972 Special thanx go to * Everyone that donated code, money, or testing time on the Garmin work including USB, USB/Serial, Hardware-specific, and Mapsource weirdness. * Ron Parker for that cool stack filter and a plethora of internal janitorial work. * Clyde England of GSAK for working with us on a number of issues. I just realized that in the bazillion places I seem to announce new releases of GPSBabel that I'd forgotten to actually do it in the mailing list I created specifically for that purpose. Sorry about that. One month ago today, I released GPSBabel 1.2.3. Get it and information about it from: http://gpsbabel.sourceforge.net I'll try to do better about getting the announcements here...
