I'm working with gpsphoto.pl and each time I run it on a set of photos. I suspect it's to do with getting the information from the internet.

My script is run from Ruby:
`perl \"#{gpsPhotoLoc}\" --image \"#{imageFile}\" #{gpxFiles} --timeoffset #{geoOffset} --maxtimediff #{maxTimeDiff} --maxdistance #{maxDistance} --geoinfo wikipedia --city auto --state guess --country guess 2>&1`

where #{} represents a variable being inserted.

A sample report for two photos. I run the script for one photo at a time, because I want to retry for the failures.:

These are puzzling. Why don't the coordinates get written for this case?

I also get timediff=52541. This suggests that I don't have gps data that meets the requirements which isn't the case.

Any idea of what's going on or how to rectify it? I'd be happy to work with a local copy of the geolocation data if the script can be modified to do so.

    Original poster here. Ignore the timediff comment. User error. Sorry.

    I've been reworking how use the script and haven't seen the other errors lately. Coincidence or was I doing something wrong?

    I'm not sure what part of the link I should be looking at. But in any case I think it's probably the same problem as my other posting—web service problem since it's random.

    You should just try out release 1.156, no matter where you get it.

    I can't see how to attach a file, so I'll paste in results from two runs a few hours apart. Both runs are for the same photos. And the results are different.

    You can attach a file by opening the "Attached File" section at the end of this page and clicking the
    "Add a File" link.
    It looks like sometimes the web-based geocoding cannot be done but this does no longer result in an error by gpsPhoto.pl.
    Is there a special reason why you start the script for every image anew. Would it not be much faster to call gpsPhoto.pl only once and give it the list of images to work on?
    We cannot improve the web-based geocoding. The only way is to add more geocoding providers and hopefully find one, which is more reliable. I also just detected, that the OpenStreetMap geocoder has moved and I did not update the URL in the script.

    I'm renaming and moving the files at the same time. i originally did it in one batch, but because i wanted to work with the files that didn't get annotated it was easier for me to capture the error and deal with the files one at a time. I'm not much of a programmer and realize I could have done it as a batch, but this was simpler. I'm not in a big hurry, not that faster isn't better.

    So for now I'm going to move the files that didn't get annotated and reprocess them. It's partially manual, but I'm trying to automate it. Maybe easier to just try again immediately, but I'm thinking waiting a bit might help.

    I still think using local file would help.
