#820 timeout too short for l'espion xtra?

I tried my old mini camera, l'espion xtra, with gphoto2.
it seems to work everything until I try to load a foto, from then on "gphoto2 -n" says 0 and the access is broken.
for me, it could be that the timeout (5000ms) is too short for this old camera?
how can I try that?
$ gphoto2 -p1 --debug --debug-logfile=log --port=usb model="DigitalDream l'espion xtra"
