    can you run
    lsusb -v
    and attach it please?

The Nikons have 2 modes, one is USB Mass Storage (handled by Linux itself, not by libgphoto2), and the other is PTP (handled by libghoto2).

0x40f might be the mass storage id.

The camera is currently in use. I'll shoot an lsusb -v to you as soon as I can get the camera back from the field.

But since we are on the subject. My understanding is the Nikon D200 should be nearly completely controllable by gphoto2, according to the available documentation I found. Perhaps I'm just doing something extremely naive which is preventing me from taking advantage of gphoto's remote control of the camera.

If you can point me in the direction of a step-by-step reference on how to communicate to the D200 to set a specific config or take any action remotely, we maybe to identify this a pebkac situation.

Okay here is my lsusb -v output with the Nikon D200 powered on.
If what I am seeing is the mass storage id, how do I enable the PTP access? Is this a kernel level issue?
Or is there some insmod magic that will ease my eloquent pain?

you can change it in the "Play" (or perhaps "Setup") menu in the camera itself.

I don't know exactly what the ioption is called, but it should
    be visible.

If switched to PTP, gphoto2 --auto-detect will show it.
    gphoto2 --list-config to list available config options, gphoto2 --get-config <name> to
get one, gphoto2 --set-config <name>=<value> to set one.

ah... that did it... it was pebkac after all.
changing the setting on the camera made it come to life.

Just FYI, I'm looking to remotely control this D200 attached to a remotely controlled Meade telescope which is controlled via stellarium as fully internet controlled instrument for remote observations, in Alaska and at some point hopefully Antarctic.

I'm closing this bug out, thanks again.
