I'm experiencing the exact same problem as described in
bug #825636: When capturing a image, the lens extends.
The camera then powers itself off. Transfering images
from the camera works fine.

Attached is the output of gphoto2 --debug --capture-image.

The syslog shows the following messages:

I find this mystifying. The log indicates that gphoto2 never
contacted the camera; how could it extend the lens? Are you
sure that the --debug log corresponds to the error?

It would be helpful to have two more --debug logs: one for a
successful operation, and one for the exact failure.

Please run gphoto2 as the root user and append the "--debug" flag
to your command line. Then, attach the output this this bug
    ticket.

Ex: gphoto2 --camera "my camera" --port "my port" -L --debug

    Thanks!

Oops, attached the wrong log. Attached a log showing the
same problem using a Ixus V. I will atach the log for the
Ixus V3 later (don't have the v3 handy at the moment...).

    syslog entries look like this

hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-1.3, assigned address 5
    usb.c: USB device 5 (vend/prod 0x4a9/0x3052) is not claimed
    by any active driver.
    usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 806
    usbdevfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 5 ep 0x81 len 64 ret -84
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1d.0-1.3 address 5

Could we have that log of the error with the IXUS V3? It should
be identical with the PowerShot S230, which I think we have working.

We haven't heard from the user in more than two months. I
suspect that the problem has been fixed, so I'll close this soon
    unless I hear more.
