It should be a PostgreSQL error message. Please try to use unicode data type (nvarchar/nchar) or use the correct charset to create the database if you want to use varchar/char data type. I have no idea about German special characters (I am a Chinese user). I think you should use try different iso-8859-x charset (from iso-8859-1 to iso-8859-15) because these charsets contains most of European characters in many languages.
