Hi. This sounds like a problem with SourceForge and how it decides which version to serve you (probably something related to browser User-Agent sniffing). I doubt it's something that can be fixed by the Golly maintainers.
Also, many Linux distributions ship Golly as a binary package which you can install with your package manager (which is the preferred way to install software on Linux), but not all are up to date. Fedora, OpenSUSE and Arch Linux have the latest version 4.2. Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint have version 3.3, which is several years old. (This is not an exhaustive list.)
