The install instructions state to use configure?

  You are correct, it doesn't. The installation instructions were written in anticipation that the auto* stuff was about to be set up by a developer who subsequently left the project without finishing the job.
  
  You are aware that at this point in time, this is a dead project, right? Unless someone comes up with significant sums of money, or some enthusiastic developers decide they want to pick this up and run with it there will be no further development.

  it would be nice if the fact that this project is dead were mentioned somewhere else besides in this forum. in the README perhaps...
