windows installer cannot launch gnuplot

When I select "launch gnuplot" in the last dialog of the gp605_win64_mingw installer, I get this error displayed:

Unable to execute file:
C:\Program Files\gnuplot\bin\wgnuplot.exe
CreateProcess failed code 267
The directory name is invalid.

Folder name is correct, and I can start wgnuplot.exe directly afterwards from the explorer or from the start menu.
