Ok, as people might have noticed by now, not much is going on with gnome-napster development. I have no time to work on it anymore and so it seems to be slowly falling apart(school and work take my time). If there is anyone who would like to step up as a maintainer that would be great so that I don't have to sit here and watch it just fall apart. I bet the people who are trying to use it would love you to! ;) Andrew Parker Current not-enough-time maintainer ------------------------------ "...it's no challange to destroy the weak." - Abner Doon, _Breaking the Game_, Orson Scott Card zaphod42@u.washington.edu |

Okay, I don't know why it wasn't working but it's working now so go ahead and download 0.6.2. It fixes the new user creation and a bunch of the back-end is different but works well. Gnome-napster v0.6.2 has been released. It fixes the new user creation problem and a minor time stamp format thing. This is just to get people up and making new users again. -Jeff ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1 |

Version 0.6.1 of gnome-napster is out. This fixes problems with downloads that are queued not starting(they should start now ;) ). And a problem with not being able to allocate memory has been fixed thanks to a patch from Terry Glass. =) So grab it and tell me if there are any lingering problems. Version 0.6.0 is out and about! It has some of the features that everyone has been asking for(not all though unfortunately :( ). Things that are now there include: - Firewall support. What this means is that if you are _not_ behind a firewall you should get much better results when trying to download things. If you _are_ behind a firewall it doesn't change a thing. - Cancel button for downloads! Yes, that is right folks! You can now stop a download!!!!! Yay! :) - Several bug fixes, so it shouldn't crash so much! Once again, if you find anything wrong send in some info and we'll try to fix it up! Please send the things to gno...@li... and we would be eternally grateful! For those of you who listen on here, I would encourage you to try getting gnome-napster from CVS. It isn't quite ready for a full fledged release yet, but it is getting there. For those of you that are not behind firewalls, the CVS version now does alternate downloads to get around the problem of the remote client being behind a firewall. Please tell me how this works, as I have a hard time testing it myself(I'm behind a firewall). There is a "Cancel" button on the download tab now, let me know how it works. And please report all the bugs you can to gno...@li... Instructions for getting the CVS code can be found at: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=518 Have fun! Hello all, Version 0.5.0 is now out and up on the Sourceforge download page. The new things in this one are: - Hotlist - It is saved between sessions - Tells you if the host is online(green) or offline(red) - Right click and you get a menu of Remove, and Host Info - Double click on the host will browse it(just kinda a shortcut) - Searching - Can now filter by Frequency, Bitrate, and Speed Bob Grimm is going to be developing gnome-napster shortly(taking over for me when I leave. He wrote the Searching updates, and is currently working on getting the firewalling code to work(I believe). Once again if you have any questions, comments, or bug reports, please email gno...@li... Hello all, my name is Andrew Parker and I am currently the new maintainer of gnome-napster. This is the first release under me. It is just some bug fixes for things that I found in 0.4.0. If anyone has any requests for features or bug reports(more important) then please email gno...@li..., thanks! Ok, here is the thing. I'm going to be working on this as _much_ as I can but, shortly, about 1 month now, I'm not going to be able to work on it. :( The problem is that I'll be exchanging to Germany and I won't be able to take my compter, so development will be a little hard. ;-) If anyone wants to take over that would be great, if not, I'll figure something out. Some updates: - The web site is now at gnome-napster.sourceforge.net - use the gnome-napster-develop list for bugs and anything else(within reason) - We (evan and I) are still looking for someone to take over permanently. - v0.4.1 is out now and fixes some stuff. - v0.5.0 is almost done and should be out soon (I hope). Well, that's all for now Andrew Parker ------------------------------ zaphod42@u.washington.edu |

Even though Adam beat me to it, I thought I should announce it officially. :) (I had forgotten about this mailing list when I added the freshmeat announcement... forgive me, it was 5am and I had a long day.) Announcement: ------------- gnome-napster 0.4.0 is released. ChangeLog available at the usual location (http://students.washington.edu/eeyem/gn/latest/ChangeLog). The major additions are hopefully a lot of crash fixes, UI improvements, and per-host browsing. Also worth mentioning are a rewritten login and the new Napster redirector (so now there are actually some files to download!). I did some of the development with a modem (for the first time) so there are some modem-friendly enhancements, particularly the "Got <x> results..." on searches and host browsing. Future: ------- Also, I got a new job yesterday. This is what prompted me to finish 0.4.0. I may not have much time to develop gnome-napster anymore, so if anyone is interested in development, let me know. I could probably coordinate development, or I could throw the code up in CVS on sourceforge, and let some people have CVS write access. 'gnapster' (linked from my page) is progressing pretty well. Josh (the author) has implemented a few features that I haven't yet, particularly downloading files from behind firewalls. I still think the gnome-napster UI is significantly better designed, and his client still blocks on connects (it's hard to avoid when you aren't using threads). Otherwise, I suggest you all check it out. Ideally, I'd like to see one client emerge. I'm not sure how friendly my new job is to gnome-napster development, but as I understand it, I'm to devote all of my available time to this new project. Conclusion ---------- It's been fun... I can't believe that it has only been a month, too. Thanks, everyone, for your compliments and bug reports. Evan. -- Evan Martin - eeyem@u.washington.edu - http://students.washington.edu/eeyem |

Hopefully, this will be the last release for a few days... I'm tired of releasing a new version every day. :) This version fixes the MSG_WAITALL problem, and add sorting of search results, among other things. I messed up with my fix from 0.3 to 0.3.1. :( If you replace MSG_WAITALL in lnap.c with 0 everything should work properly. I'm sorry, I should've been more careful. If you're curious about *why* this is a problem, read this summary (from thr...@at..., thanks!): ***begin mail snippet*** Anyway, line 262 in lnap.c is a call to "recv". "man recv" tells me about recv(2), for getting data from the network, and it says MSG_WAITALL is a valid flag. It also tells me that <sys/types.h> and <sys/socket.h> need to be included. They are. Checking <sys/socket.h>, it says that on my system (RH6.0, so glibc-2.1) the MSG_* #defines are in <bits/socket.h> So I look at *that* one, and MSG_WAITALL is *not* there. However, rpm tells me that the <bits/socket.h> is owned by the package glibc-devel, and no files in glibc-devel have been changed since the original install. I'm not really a programmer, but i looks to me like someone somewhere has stuffed up royally. The man page would indicate it's not you, and rpm would indicate it's not me... do you have any idea who we can blame, or indeed how to fix your pleasant program so I can play with it? :) ***end mail snippet*** I think someone has "stuffed up", if it's documented in the manpage but not available on the system. So, with 0.3.1, I tried to rewind the 0.3 code to 0.2, and somehow managed to stuff it up myself, even though I only needed to edit one line. Note that making this change in 0.3 *won't* work. I'm not sure why you'd still be trying to make 0.3 work, though, because 0.3.1 has a few new features. Anyway, this #define is different on different platforms. Jim <ji...@cr...> writes "0x40... I found the definition for this in socket.h on a Solaris box." James Paul Willcox <jwi...@in...> writes "I was able to find the value off of a deja search, which is 0x44." Someone else running Debian claimed it wasn't defined on their box. On my system, it's 0x100. Conclusion: don't use MSG_WAITALL. :) Sorry again for the problems. Evan. |

v0.3 wouldn't compile on many systems; v0.3.1 fixes that. I also implemented the features that people have been asking for lately. I promise I'll slow down the release cycle now. :) Evan. **begin changelog** * Version 0.3.1 - bugfix release * Remove MSG_WAITALL code; some systems didn't support it. * Add connection speed to search results list. * Double click in search results begins download. * Default to popping up login box on start. |
