seems to be controlled by the file or is reset to 100 each time a new file is opened
it might be better to let the user set the volume to a value which would be sticky when opening new files
this way the user won't blast their ears when opening new files

Problem is, that volume you are talking about (the slider on the GUI) is an integral part of a schedule's design, essentially the Master volume in Ardour. In an extreme case, someone might design a schedule with the intent to have clipping; there is nothing"illegal" about that, and in fact, in Ardour often i'll allow some clipping to diminish importance of some transients. More often in Gnaural, though, you have cases like "Hypnagogic Gale" (my favorite at the moment - knocks me out! http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnaural/files/Presets/Mindstates/HypnagogicGale.gnaural/download ) that has the overall volume reduced to eliminate clipping
