Hello, I'm happy to announce the release of GLtron 0.70 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. A Mac OS 9 version will follow soon. The changes from 0.62 include: - New AI that actively tries to cut you off - Two new Gameplay modes (that can be combined with each other): Booster (where you can accelerate using a limited 'Turbo' supply), and Wall Acceleration (where you speed up if you get close to an enemy cycle's trail) - better handling of .ini file (versioning & protection against partly written files), a simplified GUI, and many many other bugfixes The files are available for download on http://www.gltron.org/download.php Also, I'd like to point out, that I made a lot of changes to the engine, greatly simplyfing further development (and hopefully leading to a shorter release cycle). Here's the (long awaited?) 0.70 beta-1 release for Linux, Win32, and Mac OS X. Mac OS 9 support will be available for the final 0.70 release. This release still has a few issues, namely: * Preference files - in order for the new features to work correctly, you'll need to remove any previously created preference files. This is how it's done: o Linux: Open a terminal, and type: rm -f ~/.gltronrc o Win32: Just uninstall any previous versions of GLtron o Mac OS X: Open a terminal, and type: rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/gltronPrefs.txt * Bot AI . The computer players don't take advantage of the new acceleration features, and hence are relatively easily beaten by a clever player. The new features in this release include: * Turbo (already present in the previously only for win32 released 0.70 alpha-1). Press and hold down the turbo key (default 'e') to accelerate for a limited amount of time (your turbo recharges when you release the key). The engine noise should give you a clue how fast you're going. * Wall acceleration - if you're near an enemy wall, your cycle speeds up. Useful for overtaking and boxing in an enemy player. But watch out, they might try to cut you off while you're closing in. This feature isn't enabled by default, but you can change that in the Game -> Game Rules -> Game Type menu. As always, your feedback is very much appreciated and essentila for me to successfully continue to develop this game. Let me know if you like/hate the new features (the more adventurous of you might even want to tweak the settings in the preferences files), and of course let me know if you find bugs. Hi everyone, I finally got a win32 package together. This is not an official release, so, please do not mirror or redistribute the file, just link to this post on http://www.gltron.org/index.html#5.7.2003 Download GLtron 0.70 alpha1 for Windows from http://www.gltron.org/stuff/gltron-0.70-alpha1.exe It features: * Time demo. Um, no. sorry. Timedemo is currently broken. But there's more useful stuff. See below. * Turbo acceleration. It works like this: In the beginning your turbo is fully charged. When you press the turbo key ('e' for player 1, 'l' for player two, etc.) your cycle starts to rapidly accelerate, and your turbo decreases. When you release the key or run out of turbo, your speed rapidly drops back to normal and your turbo regenerates. You can configure the turbo behaviour by the following config variables in your GLtron.ini (overriding the defaults in scripts/config.lua): booster_max: value of a fully charged turbo. booster_use, value of turbo converted to speed per second. booster_decrease: drop of speed per second upon turbo release. booster_regenerate: you guessed it, the amount of turbo recharged per second. Some examples: With a default speed of 8.5 and a booster_max of 6.5 you can almost double your speed, and it takes you 6.5 seconds to do so. It takes 8 seconds to drop back to normal speed, and you need to wait about 16 seconds for your turbo to fully recharge. Play with these values, and tell me your favorite settings (preferably tested against a human opponent). The AI doesn't use the turbo yet, so it's pretty easy to box it in. * Mp3 and Ogg vorbis music playback. This time it really works. Just drop the file into the music directory, restart the game (in case you were already running it) and press left/right on the song entry in the audio menu. * Ati Radeon 9000 fixes. A lot of people had problems with those cards, i.e. GLtron was crashing after about 3 seconds of gameplay. It's really ATI's fault, but nevertheless, when the cards price finally dropped below CHF 100 (about $70), I got myself one and had a look at it. It works flawlessly now (if not, try to upgrade to the latest drivers). * Glance keys, By pressing q/w (or u/i for player 2, etc. etc.) you can glance left and right. Releasing the key restores your camera. Useful in 1st person mode (which makes for some pretty intense gameplay, try to (ab)use the turbo to beat the AI in 1st person mode). There's probably lots of small changes I've already forgotton about too. Please please give this alpha release a test, and give me feedback (i.e. tell me if it works, or point out the offending issues). Download GLtron 0.70 alpha1 for Windows from http://www.gltron.org/stuff/gltron-0.70-alpha1.exe What's left to do for the real 0.70 release: * Armagetron style wall acceleration. This will be a configurable option, just like the turbo will be. Basically, if you're riding close to an enemy trail, you gain speed so you can overtake them.AI improvements. The AI should handle turbo. If I get lucky, the AI will be scriptable, i.e. you can tweak AI settings, add your own tactics, etc. without having totouch a C compiler. I'll try to export the necessary functions to lua, so it'll just be a matter of tweaking scripts/ai.lua :-) AI Scripting is not a must have for 0.70 though, so I might save that for a later version * Anything important I forgot? Hello, I'm very happy to finally announce the release GLtron 0.62. It doesn't include networking (that is still being worked on, though), but it has many improvements over the previously released 0.61. I encourage everyone to upgrade. Some of the changes: * better & faster shadows * red outlines on the recognizer * better 3D sound effects * sound effects for player's lightcycle * sound effects for recognizer flying overhead * support for 'switching songs' (add your own music) * mp3 support * joystick support * better 2d map (3 sizes) * more intuitive config options If you already downloaded the 0.62 pre4 that was released on Saturday, there's no need to download 0.62 again, unless you have a joystick/gamepad and have some problems with it (I included a fix for joysticks which can't be properly calibrated). Hello, I'm glad to announce that GLtron 0.62 pre4 is released, and, if no big showstoppers show up, the 'official' GLtron 0.62 will be released on christmas eve (if no bugs are found, they'll be identical - so no need to download it again then). Currently, downloads are for linux & windows, mac downloads will hopefully be available shortly. Hello, GLtron development as gained some momentum again, thanks to Jon Atkins, Todd Kirby, Nicolas Deniaud and Darrell Walisser, who are busy contributing patches, pointing out bugs, maintaining the (upcoming) network branch, assuring cross-platform availability etc. We're almost ready to make a 0.62 release. As the version number indicates, this is mainly a 'maintenance' release. However, tons of bugs have been fixed. Visual appearance has improved. It sports a scripting language now. Tons of more configurable options. Totally new sound engine (can play mp3's now). It's cleaner to work with etc. The current TODO list is at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gltron/gltron/TODO?rev=HEAD&c ontent-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup This is a link into CVS, so the list will always be more or less up-to-date. I'm interested in feedback and comments regarding the TODO list. Send it either to the mailing list: glt...@li... or to me: ma...@da... Which items should definitely be fixed berote the 0.62 release? Is there anything important missing from the TODO? There's no binaries available at this point, but you can fetch the source (3 MB) from http://www.gltron.org/stuff/gltron-0.62pre2.tar.gz The INSTALL file got a bit updated. I suggest you read it. Hello, There is a GLtron snapshot, 0.60 beta/prerelease at http://www.gltron.org/stuff/gltron-0.60-beta-20001218.zip It may be buggy, and I know at least one way to crash it, but if you don't mess with the soundtrack menu, it shouldn't be too bad. Darrell has the mac version ready. It's at his usual site (http://icdweb.cc.purdue.edu/~walisser/gltron/). Art-Pack support is in. You can see a screenshot from Nicolas' metalTron pack at http://www.gltron.org/stuff/gltron-0.60.png The metalTron pack is also included in the beta.
