I just checked in a slightly better status dialog - readable - but no sorting yet. However I am out of action till probably Wednesday. Sent via BlackBerry -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Winters <pat...@ny...> Date: Fri, 08 Aug 2008 14:35:44 To: 'Andrew Case'<ac...@co...>; 'Paul Munson Bethe'<pm...@ny...> Cc: <git...@li...> Subject: RE: [Gitclipse-devel] Things to do I'm happy to push release further, but the further this goes the more problems we'll introduce. We're never going to get this perfect. Paul, try and work on the memory issue, and I'll try and work on the MoveDelete Undo/Redo operations. The Status dialog probably needs a complete rewrite. I think it should have a single tableviewer much like Commit, with the ability to sort columns on status, name, or type. I think we need to release next week or it will get out of hand. > -----Original Message----- > From: git...@li... The TODO really should be our bug tracker on sourceforge. Any time anyone thinks of something, go ahead and add it as either a bug or feature request. Intestingly, the more bugs we have (and have closed) the more active our project looks. -- Drew On Fri, 8 Aug 2008, Paul Munson Bethe wrote: > > I tried associating gitclipse with a large project == 5000 files, > and it crashes with an out-of-memory error! > > I am trying to look at this in a debugger, but I am certain that we should not release until that is resolved. > Also, Andrew observed that Status is not particularly pretty - so that will have to be fixed. > > I would guess, with my other project taking priority for the next few days, that next Friday, or more likely, the following week. > > As far as TODO - I am not aware of one anymore. > > -Paul > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Michelle S Osborne <ms...@ny...> > Date: Friday, August 8, 2008 9:03 am > Subject: Re: [Gitclipse-devel] Things to do > To: Patrick Winters <pat...@ny...> > Cc: git...@li... > > >> What day are we planning to release? I tried associating gitclipse with a large project == 5000 files, and it crashes with an out-of-memory error! -Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: Michelle S Osborne <ms...@ny...> Date: Friday, August 8, 2008 9:03 am Subject: Re: [Gitclipse-devel] Things to do To: Patrick Winters <pat...@ny...> Cc: git...@li... > What day are we planning to release? What day are we planning to release? I'm getting ready to go on vacation, so beyond adding more javadocs I don't think I'll get much done in the next few days. I put in some help documentation and modified the commit dialog a bit to look a little nicer. I can't seem to figure out how to get the Decorator color to be olive. I try and work on the MoveDelete hook asap. > -----Original Message----- > From: Andrew Case [mailto:ac...@co...] > Sent: Thursday, August 07, 2008 9:28 AM > To: Patrick Winters > Cc: git...@li... > Subject: Re: [Gitclipse-devel] Things to do > > Yeah. > > I didn't finish Undo/Redo which I think is pretty critical. Yeah. I didn't finish Undo/Redo which I think is pretty critical. My code was a mess, not very much done and doesn't compile yet so it's probably not worth taking a look at. For reference though I was following this approach though, it seemed like it had potential: Extend an AbstractOperation with GitDeleteOperation + implement Undo/Redo in this operation Extend an AbstractOperation with GitMoveOperation + implement Undo/Redo in this operation Have MoveDeleteHook call the above operations when called. Also: Documentation on Usage/Tutorial and from eclipse' help menu would be extremely useful. Prettify Status so the UI is a bit better looking (it looked strange on my machine). -- Drew On Thu, 7 Aug 2008, Patrick Winters wrote: > Hey all, > It's cumbersome to run core tests because we're forced to launch UI > sessions. Hey all, It's cumbersome to run core tests because we're forced to launch UI sessions. I want to separate the tests so that the core can be run headless and much faster. I think this would encourage us to use them more. If you remove ui from the core dependencies, you should be able to find all of the compile errors. I'll do my best to go through them ASAP so we can get a better testing infrastructure together. But, is there anything else more pressing? -- Patrick |

I agree - with the license and credit issues resolved, we don't have to take the site down just yet. Lets try to get all the polish done before the actual release. ----- Original Message ----- From: Andrew Case <ac...@co...> Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2008 2:13 pm Subject: Re: [Gitclipse-devel] Alpha Release To: Michelle S Osborne <ms...@ny...> Cc: git...@li... > Sounds good to me. > > -- > Drew > > On Wed, 6 Aug 2008, Michelle S Osborne wrote: > > > I feel the same. I feel the same. We can tie up a lot of loose ends in a week. Speaking of which, can people try out the Add command on their machines? Drew, Thanks for taking care of this. Since we aren't pushed to make a release, I think we should hold off until the end of next week. That's on the assumption that everyone will contribute. I think we have a few things to double check work correctly, and it would be nice to work in some project create/import wizards, and I'd like to see some more test cases. I updated the update-site and plug-in versions to 0.1.0 as opposed to 1.0.0 to avoid greater than version problems in the future. Seems to still be good. If you had installed the plugin when it was 1.0.0 you'll need to uninstall and install the new version since it will ignore it since the version is less than before. -- Drew |

At first glance they appear to be okay because Apache allows relicensing with licenses that don't conflict (similar to BSD). My only question is about their patent stances, but I assume those are probably similar and don't conflict. You're right the code is from subclipse. And subclipse prominently claims to be EPL. I think we're probably okay. If someone think otherwise we know which files are of issue since the notice is in the file. I'm good with it. I think that's all we needed to get done for an official alpha release. Patrick, Is the update site automatically updated after a successful build? Paul, As much documentation as you can muster on the Usage/Tutorial would be great (I saw you already put up some on the wiki). Everyone, I didn't manage to finish my Undo/Redo implementation, I probably won't have time to get back to it until next Friday (when my other project is due). So if anyone wants to try their hand at that, they are more than welcome to. Does anyone want to go ahead and make an anouncement?! Probalby the same places that javagit did would be great as far as I'm concerned. I'm putting the update link on our main page tonight. Thanks everyone! -- Drew On Wed, 6 Aug 2008, Andrew Case wrote: > Hmm... maybe they're compatible licenses. You're sure that's where those > came from? Hmm... maybe they're compatible licenses. You're sure that's where those came from? Can you look to see if subclipse mentions this anywhere in their documentation? The apache licenses are in Subclipse as well so I am not sure how they did that. I can rewrite the functionality but that will take a couple days. Han, I don't know if the EPL and Apache are compatible (EPL and EPL is fine, but EPL and Apache I don't know about). I ran a script that appended our EPL to everything, but that probably doesn't fly with Apache code. Okay. Copyrights in place. Authors removed. Build is fixed. As soon as Han adds back the SVN copyright notices and we mention in the documentation that much code is borrowed from Subclipse and IBM we should be good. -- Drew On Tue, 5 Aug 2008, Andrew Case wrote: > This file: > edu.nyu.cs.gitclipse.ui/src/edu/nyu/cs/gitclipse/ui/model/IGitLogMessage.java: > > Has origins with Apache License. This file: edu.nyu.cs.gitclipse.ui/src/edu/nyu/cs/gitclipse/ui/model/IGitLogMessage.java: Has origins with Apache License. Is this being utilizied? It needs to be removed and rewritten under EPL. Other than that, I've pulled all the author tags and added our copyright as well as LICENSE files. Fixing my breakage at the moment, should be done soon though. -- Drew |

With regard to my previous comment about JGit being largely undocumented: this came from the version of JGit I downloaded at the beginning of the term from here: http://freshmeat.net/projects/jgit/ Turns out it's pretty dated (from September 2007) and in January 2008 (http://svnsearch.org/svnsearch/repos/EGIT/search? revision=383&showPaths=all), JGit did indeed get JavaDoc comments for most public methods (confirmed by grabbing a current clone of their repository). However, the comments still aren't up to the standards we've been using, and there's no surrounding documentation - had there been, I wouldn't have ended up spending time looking at an outdated version of JGit. And they don't have anything comparable to our cookbook page, to help you understand how to use their API. Shawn, See my comments below. Javagit, You should include Maven on your requirements. See some license/design comments below. Gitlcipse, See some license/design comments below. > I'm glad to see the effort but forth, even if it isn't the direction > I would have (or already have) taken. Thanks. I'm sure regardless this will stur up some interest in either of our projects. We considered working on a full implementation as well, but we decided it would be much easier to do a wrapper for now and if we wanted to build in a native interface later we could. I think as long as someone has the time to write/support an entire native implementation, then this definitely has its advantages. > >> There are many reasons we decided to go our own route some of these >> reasons are as follows: >> >> 1) We found egit extremely difficult to deal with compile, install, >> utilization wise. >> 2) We had problems getting egit to work perperly although at the start of >> our project this may have just been unfamiliarity with eclipse. > > Well, we don't have an update site yet, because we don't think its > really something a mortal can make use of yet. It might not be that bad for someone that is rather familiar with how to do it and is pretty comfortable using eclipse, but for a common user, that's way too much to ask. But as you said, you didn't think it was to that point yet anyway. Which in return means little interest. It's kind of the chicken and the egg thing. It's hard to get developers without a complete project, it's hard to get a complete project without developers. We're trying to have a simple install but not very complete project as of yet in hopes of attracting some developers. > I had a harder time trying to install javagit and gitclipse today, > as I didn't have Maven available to build javagit and I didn't want > to have to download it just to build a small Jar. Gitclipse doesn't actually require you install javagit, which means you just install using the standard plug-in install method. Javagit's build is a bit more complicated because of maven it's true (I don't see this listed on their requirements page... I'll post to their user list about it, thanks for the mention). >> 3) The javagit people found jgit lacking documentation and felt it would >> be easier to write their own going in a different direction than to try >> and jump into your project and starte mangling your code. > > Interesting. I it was having a hard time following the code in general. It's something that tinkering with it for a month or so probably would have solved, but there was a greater desire on their part to just get started and write our own. >> 4) There was egit/jgit code available, but we didn't see much talk about >> it on the mailing lists except people asking if it was dead or not (with >> no replies). > > It varies from week to week. Some folks on the Git list have asked > us to always include [JGIT PATCH] in our patch subject lines so > they can filter the patches to /dev/null, because at times the > volume is too much for them. Yeah, we seperated our javagit and gitclipse lists long ago because the flow was way too much and really there isn't too much cross talk between the two. I definitely have seen an upshot of activity in jgit/egit since the SoC started which is great, but we started our project before SoC so this activity build up was too late for us to notice. >> 5) License confusion/incompatibilities. Yeah, we discussed a lot of license issues and settled on LGPL for javagit and simply require that git already be provided by the user so we don't have any distributing issues. And again, we probably would have based our plug-in on egit had it been seperated out from jgit and if it hadn't been under the EPL since at the time we wanted ours GPL. About halfway through we decided to switch to EPL, but by then it was too late to just switch to your plug-in. >> Established is a relative term. So is gitk. Yet the > latter two are each 1 man projects that are still core to the Git > user experience. I agree those projects aren't dead, but I don't think they're in the same boat. I didn't say egit/jgit was dead either though, I just said it looked like it may have been strugling. Also, those other applications have standard build and install setups as far as I know and are included in a number of major distros. So they're pretty well established in that regard. Jgit/Egit, not so much (unfortunately since I think it's a good project and everyone would benefit from a good Git Eclipse plug-in). > Our next release will likely feature an update site and something > an end-user can actually _use_. We hadn't ever discussed actually trying to have eclipse ship with Gitclipse by default but at current that wasn't an option for us (since git is required).
