Hi, I don't usually bother trying to rebuild docs when a package
ships them, but in the distro I'm associated with (Beyond Linux From
Scratch, or BLFS [i.]) we sometimes offer a list of dependencies for
anybody who wishes to do that. And for other reasons I'm looking at
packages which use ImageMagick. Gutenprint apparently used for
rebuilding the docs at some point (I doubt anybody at our end has
actually tried that for some time).
This is less than important, but it applies to 5.2.12-pre2 as well as
to 5.11. Sorry it's so wordy.
I can see that I need to use --enable-maintainer-mode to (re)build
the docs, and that configure checks for 'convert' and 'texi2html'
amongst other things. And without texi2html it warns -
configure: WARNING: HTML documentation cannot be regenerated!
In 5.2.12-pre2 it seemed to regenerate doc/gutenprint/html using
doxygen when I hid texi2html (it's so old that I do not usually
install it). That was NOT running 'make clean' (point 3 below).
Maybe I'm confused about how this fits together, or perhaps some
legacy dependencies have dropped out but are still referenced in
configure, but I'm puzzled by the following:
1. The Makefiles set CONVERT to /usr/bin/convert but do not seem to
use it.
2. Similarly, if I make texi2html available then TEXI2HTML is
defined in the Makefiles but not apparently used. After that, I
realised that the developer html had not been rebuilt.
3. At least when I enable maintainer mode, configure completes with:
Finished configuring. Please review CAREFULLY the configuration summary above.
Type 'make clean' followed by 'make' to build the package
then 'make install' to install it.
But if I make clean, with both convert and texi2html present, the
build fails:
