We request support for the Sony UP-DR150 dye-sub printer.
I have a 700MHz iMac with 640 MB running 10.3.9.
I need to create a new printer (UP-DR150 Sony Dye-sub)
in gutenprint.
http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/5629
Can you add support for this printer ?
If I pay you to add the open source support for the
UP-DR150,
how much ?
After modifying printers.xml to add a new printer entry
src/main/printers.xml: <printer name="Sony
UP-DR150" driver="sony-updr150" manufacturer="Sony"
model="2001">
and adding:
src/foomatic/foomatic-printermap: #gptofoo
sony-updr150 printer/Sony-UP-DR150
Then, when i try compiling gutenprint-5.0.0-beta4 I get
the following error:
>>>>>>>

I've assigned this to our dye sub maintainer.
Adding a new printer definition with a new model number to
printers.xml won't be enough, in any event, since the driver
won't actually recognize it. You might want to try the
existing UP-DP10 driver to see if it works; this would help us.

Yes,, we have tried the up-dp10 driver. It recognizes the updr150 by
name, and is able to send file to printer. Printer displays that it is
receiving file ( via front panel info on printer) but does not print. The file
seems to go nowhere.

Hello Rick,
well I can take an eye on Sony UP-DR150 support. It takes some time (I
guess about 14 days) because I need to reverseenginee the printers
protocol.
If you will donate this driver I'll be very glad... How much? It's up to you -
my wishlist contains items from 15 to 850EUR :-).
Cheers, Michael

I would be happy to donate the driver. And would also be
glad to put 500 us dollars on a paypal (or similar) account
for your wishlist.
If you need the driver, please let me know, I can forward
it. If you need access to a updr150 sony printer, that
would be more difficult, but could be done.
BTW- we would only be using the 4 x 6 inch size media.
best regards, rick

Michael-
I have responded to both of your emails, with print file attachment. Guess
you have not gotten them. I do not know why. I will post the files at this
link:

provider's mailserver). Thanks for files.

I recently bought a DR150 because the linuxprinting.org
entry indicated that the printer was supported.
Unfortunately, despite a lot of fighting with it, it just
refuses to print... the printer's LCD claims it's receiving
the data, but then does nothing.
I've verified the printer physically prints under windows,
but no matter what I try under Linux (including checking
different paper options etc) I'm still not winning :-(
The driver interface & config looks great - thanks very much
to the author / sponsor for putting that together. I have
the feeling that maybe I'm missing something very simple
out. If anyone would be kind enough to advise / assist, I
would certainly be happy to pay anyone who can get it
working for me!
Many Thanks,
David Youngs

Changing this to a bug because this printer's on the
supported list, and the fact that the printer's ack'ing data
but not printing anything suggests strongly that
Gutenprint's generating the wrong data. Michael, could you
please look at this?

Hi David,
% Unfortunately, despite a lot of fighting with it, it just
% refuses to print... the printer's LCD claims it's receiving
% the data, but then does nothing.
...
let's try to find where the problem is...
What UI do you use (gimp)? What print server (CUPS, LPRng,..)? Can you
send
your config (gutenprint printrc file and/or cups config)? BTW what linux
distro you use?
Could you try next
1) print under windows to file and then send the file to printer under linux
(simple 'cat windows.prn >/dev/usb/lp0' should work, probably must be root)
2) print under linux to file and then sent the file to printer under windows
does any of these works? Can you put these print files somewhere on the
web
for me?
Cheers Michael

Hi Michael,
Apologies for the inordinate delay getting these files
uploaded - we really are keen to get the beastie working
ASAP :-)
As discussed,
On Windows:
We've been using WinXP (Pro, SP2) with the latest Sony DR150
driver (aka
http://www.sony.net/Products/DP-driver/Win/index.html\)
On Linux, we've tried using Debian (unstable, 2.6.12 kernel)
and Ubunto ("Dapper Drake" I believe, one of the latest
'testing' versions). We've tried on 32 & 64bit systems
without success, using the latest version of Gutenprint
(5.0.0rc2).
As per your suggestion, we've generated .prn files from both
Linux & Windows, and then tried to copy them to USB002 on
windows (the DR150 machine).
The windows generated .prn file prints fine; the linux
generated one does not. Both jobs are displayed as being
"Local Downlevel document", but the Gutenprint generated
version fails (strictly speaking appears as paused within
the Windows print queue) with the error "Printing - Error:12".
I've done a side by side comparison of first few characters
of the .prn files... and have tried changing a few
characters in the linux one to match windows just in case
it's a simple control code issue... however, have had no
luck there either.
We wondered whether it was a USB issue with the linux
systems, but we also installed gutenprint on an iMac
(10.2.8) and that wouldn't work either (it may have been a
different issue - the PID kept failing with code 5 according
to CUPS' log on the mac).
As discussed, I've uploaded the original windows and linux
generated files to
http://transfer1.livelinktechnology.net/DR150.zip
Any help is very much appreciated & sorry to take a while to
get this information to you; we really are keen to fix it
ASAP... please don't hesitate to let me know if you'd like
any more information.
Many thanks,
David
