@speachy Thanks for your tip! CUPS + gutenprint is much better front end than gutenprint-printer-app! My issue is resolved.
Oh, you're using the gutenprint-printer-app on ubunbu. I honestly have no idea if that works properly; I use standalone CUPS + gutenprint directly using the lp command flow (with explicitly specified sizes) rather than whatever mechanism the app uses to route cmdline prints and select the size that gets used. (Also, my tests were done on a DNP QW410 which is programatically identical to the CZ-01)

Did you use a CZ-01 when you ran your test? because I think the issue might be the fact that the CZ-01 prints in a different orientation to most other dyesub printers I have seen. It seems like when I print a photo that has portrait dimesions it comes out sideways, unless I explicitly add -o orientation-requested=landscape then it prints in the correct orientation (portrait) but still is a 4x4 square image. This is with a fresh install on ubuntu 25.10 - sudo snap install gutenprint-printer-app and...
Could I ask where should I see the fix, please? do_gcr() still contains: 1135 output[0] = kk; 1136 output[1] += ck * cg->cyan_balance; 1137 output[2] += ck * cg->magenta_balance; 1138 output[3] += ck * cg->yellow_balance; 1139 nzx.nzl |= *(unsigned long long *) output; in gutenprint-5.3.6-2026-02-16T02-19-a019bf9c. And the issue is still present on Sparcv9. Thank you, m.

No, the first step is recognizing that you need me more than I need you. The second step is realizing that folks are more inclined to help people who are polite. Entitles assholes get pointed at the "THE PROGRAM "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND" sign. On that note, enjoy solving your own problem.

nice try to push this under the rug because you decided to close open tickets 4 months later. do the minimum amount of research and you will find a myriad of links like this https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/cannot-print-and-cups-genppdupdate-fails/147993 outlining that your shitty solution that hasn't worked for 15 years doesn't work. And it won't work by default if someone has a third party ppd. So, like, stop breaking compatibility maybe or trying to cope about you being somehow in the right....
Thanks for getting back to me, I am just using gutenprint-printer-app filename.jpg to print with, and indeed you made me realize that my version of libcups was a bit out of date. I updated it to 2.4.16 and now I see different paper size options in the webserver media settings page, but I still cannot print anything but a 4x4 square! I also went through and confirmed cups-filters, cups-pdf, ghostscript, gimp-print, gutenprint-printer-app, libcupsfilters, libppd, pappl, pappl-retrofit, and qpdf are...

I just printed several different different sizes back to back, so there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with gutenprint itself here, instead the problem appears to lie somewhere higher up. You didn't mention what client you are using to print. I suspect it is either not specifying the size properly or it is not doing so at all, so gutenprint ends up falling back to the default (ie 4x4). FWIW I've seen this happen before with some MacOS versions, a workaround was committed to CUPS in 2.4.12 --...
Citizen CZ-01 can only print 4x4
First, piggybacking on a completely unrelated thread is bad etiquette. Second, I've only ever seen "Failure to receive data from printer (libusb error -4: (12/12 from 0x82))" when there is a hardware-level problem going on that prevents communications over USB. There is nothing selphy_print can do about that, unfortunately.
Printer prints successfully but produces an error forcing me to cancel and reset
The workaround mentioned was added some time ago, but as I never heard anything back from the reporter I'm closing this.

2025 Gutenprint breaks drivers because it doesn't support old format
The reason PPDs are versioned is because gutenprint itself is versioned, and options come and go. Meanwhile, The solution today is the same as the solution fiffteen years ago: Run 'sudo cups-genppdupdate' and restart cups
The short answer: if you followed those instructions after 2025-12-24. you already have the updated backend code, so you can select the "P461" printer from within Gutenprint, and you should be good to go. The frontend (ie gutenprint) changes consist solely of adding the P310+P322 to the printer list. I haven't created a new snapshot tarball in a while (the plan is to do so after I deal with another printer), but you can build it directly from the git code with a few additional steps if you so pr...
Hi. I've seen some vague references to something similar but they dont seems to exactly apply to what I want to know. I'm creating a halftone screen in PhotoShop (1 bit / bitmap) at 2880 dpi. I'm printing to an Epson P600 and getting pretty good results but I want to make sure I'm not missing out on some better settings. My revelant settings are Resolution: 5760 x 2880, Color Correction: Uncorrected, Dither Algorithm: Ordered. Those seem to get me the sharpest results. Does anyone have any recommendations...

Yes, I'm not familiar with the Gutenprint code, but I can read C and would be happy to help with debugging.
Bug 755 seems related, but not exactly this one. In that one there are two settings for selecting color-space, where there shall be one. When they don't match colors are wrong, but not as in this bug. In this one the color gradient is not linear, in that one colors aren't mapped correctly.

It may be related, but it's not exactly the same bug.
In bug 756 you can see that I'm experiencing the same problem. I'm not familiar with the internals of gutenprint, but I can help debug any software and understand the code.
Let's go.
Can you please follow #757, I think this may be a dupe of that one.
This is a probably a dupe of #757. Alberto, would you be willing to follow that bug? I am trying to figure out what happened and how to fix it. Would be nice for all of us to collaborate there.
There were a lot of refactor type changes to the last version of gutenprint. This probably broke these drivers. Johannes, are you at all technical?

Hello everyone. I have a Canon Pixma MP495, which I used for years with my Intel Mac. However, it wouldn't work with my M2 Mac until I discovered gutenprint-5.3.3. I know gutenprint no longer provide Mac support, but I decided to give gutenprint-5.3.3 a try and to my delight, the printer is now recognised by my M2 Mac and works great, except for one thing - the printer utility won't display any info for the printer ink levels. I'm wondering if anyone else out there has tried this and might have a...
Thanking you again, Sami. I understand this is a work-in-progress. That, in itself, gives more hope than if this printer was simply being ignored. I wish I could offer more to the project, but I fear this is all (way) above my level. But who knows? Maybe I'll surprise myself ;-)
Then I should probably give an update. My branch of gutenprint at https://github.com/sliedes/gutenprint/tree/msg-20250719 (tagged as of today) is a bit of a mess, but the printer is there and seems to work it can print, but doesn't seem to want to use gray, and the colors are obviously off (like red becoming orange). I didn't manage to understand the code well enough to grok how to make it use gray. I haven't done any color or dot size calibration I also don't know if all the paper sizes etc. are...
I just joined SourceForge to reply here and to subscribe. I just recently purchased an ET-8550 and would LOVE to be able to use Gutenprint to make use of extended ICC profiles without needing to boot into Windows. I'm going to DL to source and try to follow along. BIG THANK YOU to Sami for pursuing this!!!
@Sami Liedes, I can't help with any of those questions but happy to help test anything you're working on with my ET-8500. Was pumped to see the email notification and your thorough digging!
I got it to work by cloning the XP-15000 driver, including at 1440 dpi, though not yet with all the nozzles aligned (I think "headOffset").But I didn't get it to use Gray. Looking at the ink xml files: <InkName translate="text" name="CMYKk" text="Six Color Photo" InkID="OTHER"> <Channels> <channel name="claria_photo_black" index="0"> <subchannel color="0" subchannel="0" name="Black" text="Black" translate="text"> <ChannelDensityParam name="BlackDensity"/> <SubchannelTransitionParam name="LightBlackTrans"/>...
Are you sure it requires ESC/PR? I tried some things with my ET-8550, and here's my current impression of things; but I would assume you would have much more insight on this. I've been reading Gutenprint source code and would be happy to experiment with this, so any pointers would be appreciated. The proprietary Epson driver sends RGB data to the printer. It uses the sometimes mentioned and dreaded RHV2 compression. In any case, just by changing the compression type I was able to get it to take uncomperssed...
