It prints also used defined variables. E.g, you can use
Init { istep = 1 } { vort2D = (dx("V") - dy("U")) }
and you will get the vort2D variable

you could change the formats if you wish in your GfsOutputSimulation options.

In fact, you can avoid even that.  I send a patch some days ago with
some tools to convert the gfs files into different formats.
