Hi everybody, I write this mail since I'm concerned about the current state of rendering and gui classes. What worries me is the current lack of homogeneity and effort duplication. Now, I for one, have dropped any further effort on the lite renderer: you can consider it dead, for the moment. So we do have a MapPane widget that works with j2d renderer, Martin's work, and MapPaneImpl that works with the Java2DRenderer, Cameron and IanT work. In my opinion, we don't need them both, since they aim at the same problem with the same objectives and trade offs. Now, I'm working to make Martin j2d renderer support sld styles, so that this high performance and flexible renderer can be used to produce styled maps. But this means that these maps will be generated by a Renderer which does not conform with Renderer2D interface. What are going to do? We need a decision I think. Martin's work is out of the current architecture, but is quite advanced, Cameron's work _is_ the current architecture, but I have yet to see it display a map. I think we have to decide what to do with this... once a decision has been taken, I volounteer to do the needed work. Please think about this subject a bit so that we can discuss it (either on the mailing list or during Monday's meeting). Best regards Andrea Aime |
