I've taken note, but I know close to nothing about rendering, so I can't really lead the charge myself. But anyone who does will definitely be my hero. Well, I think it should not be integrated to the codebase, geowidgets should just be the project that you use, and anyone interested in gui stuff we'd just say 'check out geowidgets', where the gui tutorials and all would live. Just like if people want a server we say checkout geoserver, or if they want a full desktop client we say check out udig.
