Hi Tom, I don't have answers to all your questions but have copied the email to the geotools email list where you may get more help. Comments inline. On Wednesday 24 April 2002 02:24, you wrote: > Hy, > > I'm interested in a web-based editing of GIS data. Is a java application suitable? The current development for geotools2 is focusing on using GML. The ESRI shapefiles used by ArcIMS should be easy to port across from geotools1, and is on the geotools2 "to do" list. > > Could you give me some hints where and how I have to proceed. Happy to give you hints, especially if you are also offering to help out with coding. :) If you decide you want to help out with geotools2 development, I see 2 things that you could help out with: 1. Implement a data interface for ESRI Shapefiles. 2. Implement a data entry/edit GUI for geographic shapes. (This could possibly be ported from the GIS Toolkit. Considering people will help you with this, I suspect you should be able to get a prototype working by July if you work hard at it. > > Does there already exits an editable Gis-framework, or what's about a > specification from theOGC? I'm not quite sure what you mean here. The open GIS have defined a framework which can be used for web based, inter-operable GIS data entry and updates. The concept is based around a "Web Feature Server" - WFS. You can find a draft specification for this at the OGC website. Rob has developed an open source WFS (although I don't think it allows updates yet), and geotools2 is working on developing a WFS client, which will allow editing features from a WFS. However, this may be more than you require if just want to edit a proprietry file format like ESRI shapefiles. > > I have to make a prototype for my diploma work (Computer Science) of an > editable Web-GIS.
