Sorry for the long delay: your message got buried in list traffic.

Right now geotools does not have support for geotiff, but this is a
planned feature and will probably be done this summer. For an overview
of the supported data types, see:

Also note that the grid coverage (raster) interface is currently being
changed. For more inforation see:

Eventually there will be a tutorial about accessing grid coverages. For
now there is some information on the Map and style tutorial about this
