It's a nice problem.

I'd be very interested to help out with algorithms or coding in any
way I can because I'm also keen to better my understanding of the
rendering system generally, though given my relative ignorance about
the internals of the renderer I might be more of a hindrance than a
help.

Regardless, I'll be very interested to follow the progress of this.
