One of the things SVN can do that CVS cannot is allow you to work directly on the repository without checkout things out. This is useful for things like deleting unwanted tags and branches, etc. This is what I did to fulfill Martin's request: svn delete -m "duplicate directories" http://svn.geotools.org/geotools/tags/maven1_0beta7/geotools2/extbin/ Java2DRendering You can use the same trick for the 'svn move' command, using URLS on both the source nad destination parameters, which makes large scale re-organizing much simpler.
